7 Must-Know Tips Before Storing Your RV Long-Term

Whether you're storing your RV for the winter or just taking a break from the road, proper preparation can save you thousands in future repairs. At Big Tom’s Boat RV & Self Storage in Aledo, TX, we see all types of RVs—and all types of mistakes.

Here's a few helpful tips on how to do it right:

1. Clean Thoroughly Inside and Out
Before storage, give your RV a deep clean. Food crumbs attract pests, and dirt or grime can lead to staining or corrosion. Don’t forget to clean out the fridge, microwave, and cupboards.

2. Disconnect the Battery
If your RV sits for weeks or months, the battery can drain completely. Disconnect it and store it in a dry, cool place. For even more protection, hook it up to a trickle charger to maintain a healthy charge.

3. Cover the Tires
UV rays and Texas heat can dry out your tires, causing cracks and flat spots. Invest in tire covers or park on plywood to reduce contact with hot asphalt or gravel.

4. Protect Against Pests
Seal all openings (exhaust pipes, vents, etc.) and check for tiny cracks where critters could sneak in. Use rodent repellents or dryer sheets in strategic places inside.

5. Drain the Water System
If you're storing over winter, drain all water lines and tanks to prevent freezing—even in Aledo’s occasional cold snaps. Add RV antifreeze to protect plumbing.

6. Ventilate (But Securely)
To prevent mold and mildew, slightly open vents or windows (if you have vent covers). Just make sure it's secure so rain or animals can’t get in.

7. Use a Quality RV Cover
If storing outdoors, invest in a breathable, waterproof RV cover. This protects your finish from UV damage, bird droppings, and debris.

Bonus Tip: Document and Label Everything
Take pictures of your RV’s condition before storage and label switches or valves you've shut off. It'll make de-winterizing or re-activation much easier.
