Winterizing Your RV in Texas: What Locals Often Miss

Texas may not be known for harsh winters, but anyone who’s lived in Aledo knows we’re not immune to surprise cold snaps and freezing temps. That means winterizing your RV—yes, even in Texas—is essential to avoid expensive damage come spring.

Here’s what many locals overlook (and how to do it right):

1. Don’t Skip Draining the Water Lines Just because we might not freeze doesn’t mean we won’t. Always drain all water tanks, pipes, and the water heater. Use RV antifreeze to protect your plumbing system—especially if your unit is sitting for months.

2. Don’t Assume Covered Storage is “Winter-Proof” Covered RV storage helps block UV rays and falling debris, but it won’t prevent freezing temperatures. You still need to winterize, even if you’re storing with us under a roof!

3. Forgetting the Exterior Seals Check and reseal your roof, windows, and door seams to keep moisture out. A small leak can lead to big interior water damage—especially when it freezes.

4. Tire Prep is Still a Must Fluctuating temps can lower tire pressure. Inflate tires to the recommended PSI, park on wood or tire pads, and use covers to reduce cracking from sun and cold.

5. Protect Your Battery Cold weather shortens battery life. Disconnect and remove the battery, storing it somewhere warm and dry. Or, if kept installed, connect it to a maintenance charger.

6. Critters Are Still Active Cooler weather drives rodents to shelter. Use peppermint oil, dryer sheets, or commercial repellents inside cabinets and vents. Seal up all external gaps.

7. Leave Fridge Doors Propped Open This tip works year-round, but especially over the winter. Clean and prop open fridge and freezer doors to prevent mold and odor buildup.

Bonus Tip: Use a Checklist Even seasoned RV owners forget a step or two. Download a winterization checklist or ask the team at Big Tom’s—we’re happy to help!
